I have been involved in woodworking from a very early age watching and helping my father build furniture in our garage shop in Grand Junction, Colorado. I was formally trained as an Industrial Arts educator, graduating from Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado but have worked in the residential and commercial construction fields for the past 45 years. I am continuing to work in my shop making custom furniture, cabinetry, toys, wooden heirloom pieces and recently have concentrated on detailed turned art pieces.
My current interests have led me to creating the "Baskets Illusion" style embellishment on pieces including platters, bowls and hollow vessels. Inspiration for my work is taken from patterns that I find in nature, Native American designs, architecture and my own patterns and textures. I also find pleasure in trying different colored stains, inks, paints, dyes and pyrography (wood burning) on vessels bowls and platters to achieve a different look to the natural color of the wood.
I have been turning utilitarian bowls and vessels utilizing locally sourced urban woods and enjoy that as well. Some of my pieces incorporate some exotic woods which add a contrast to the urban woods. Experimenting with different woods, styles, design and techniques has given me an opportunity to expand my skills and has been a most enjoyable hobby as I can make objects that are both functional and beautiful.
I also enjoy making various types of furniture, wall art pieces, bandsaw boxes and have been making "cigar box" guitars and stringed instruments while working in my shop in Centennial, Colorado. I am an active member of the Front Range Woodturners Club in Denver and a member of the national American Association of Woodturners.
